12 ways to celebrate: CW holiday programs!

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

SupernaturalOver the next two days, WBNX has a sleighfull of holiday specials and Christmas-themed programs to keep your family occupied—before and after Santa’s arrival.  Wednesday night, Emma Roberts and Norm McDonald are the voice stars of our brand new animated hour, The Flight Before Christmas; followed by The Story of Santa Claus—featuring old pals from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Betty White and Ed Asner.  Earlier risers on Christmas morning will find TV specials beginning at 6am; and throughout the day, sitcom families celebrate the season in their own humor-filled ways.  Sam and Dean Winchester aren’t laughing, however, when they track down the Anti-Santa on A Very Supernatural Christmas.  Here’s a quick rundown of at least a dozen Yuletide shows you can enjoy:

Christmas Eve:

8pm The Flight Before Christmas
9pm The Story of Santa Claus
11:30 Frasier

Christmas Day:

6am Red Boots for Christmas
6:30 The Stableboy’s Christmas
7am Christmas Memories
7:30 A Fresh Prince Christmas
6:30p According to Jim: Christmas Party
9pm A Very Supernatural Christmas
10pm Friends: Christmas in Tulsa
11pm George Lopez: Christmas Punch
11:30 Frasier: Fight Before Christmas

Fred ThompsonWe’re so glad to hear Frasier star Kelsey Grammer was released from the hospital this week after suffering a mild heart attack.  And with the political primaries just concluding, it reminded me that Kelsey bears a strong resemblance (give or take ten years) to actor and former senator Fred Thompson, who dropped out of the White House race a few months ago.  Ironically, Kelsey does occupy the Oval Office in his next big-screen appearance, Swing Vote.  Premiering Aug. 1, the comedy narrows down a U.S. presidential election to the vote of one lovable loser, played by Kevin Costner.  His interest in politics doesn’t end there, however.  Three years ago on a national radio show, Kelsey discussed running for office at some point, possibly a senate seat in California; and both he and Fred were guests at President Bush’s first inauguration.  The five-time Emmy winner has a pretty full plate at the moment, though, with TV and film work, plus his production company which brought both Girlfriends and The Game to The CW.  He and his wife are also raising two young children.  Remember, you can see Frasier twice a day, Monday through Saturday on WBNX.

Jensen, Jared and Taylor, prior to CW fame

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

SupernaturalSupernatural ends with a mid-season finale nailbiter tonight, but don’t worry—we won’t leave ya hangin’ without your boys.  We’ve uncovered some rare footage of Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and even CW colleague Taylor Momsen (Jenny on Gossip Girl) to tide you over until new episodes return.  Jensen and Taylor share the unusual common bond of having taped six full episodes of a series that somehow never made it to the airwaves.  Between his stints on Dawson’s Creek and Smallville, Jensen headlined the drama Still Life, and you can click here to watch the entire 39-minute pilot.  During that same 2003 campaign, Jared was still heavily involved with Gilmore Girls, but filmed a short action presentation for Young MacGyver, which was not picked up.  But you can click here to enjoy the seven footage clips.  Taylor was only 12-years-old when she was cast opposite Emmy nominee and fan favorite Jane Leeves (Daphne on Frasier) in the dysfunctional-family comedy, Misconceptions.  Watch the premiere episode here and judge for yourself whether it had long-term potential.  Something to consider: if any one of these three shows had become network hits, we wouldn’t have the remarkable brother-like chemistry on Supernatural…or the ideal social-climbing little sister we’ve come to love on Gossip Girl.
