12 ways to celebrate: CW holiday programs!

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

SupernaturalOver the next two days, WBNX has a sleighfull of holiday specials and Christmas-themed programs to keep your family occupied—before and after Santa’s arrival.  Wednesday night, Emma Roberts and Norm McDonald are the voice stars of our brand new animated hour, The Flight Before Christmas; followed by The Story of Santa Claus—featuring old pals from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Betty White and Ed Asner.  Earlier risers on Christmas morning will find TV specials beginning at 6am; and throughout the day, sitcom families celebrate the season in their own humor-filled ways.  Sam and Dean Winchester aren’t laughing, however, when they track down the Anti-Santa on A Very Supernatural Christmas.  Here’s a quick rundown of at least a dozen Yuletide shows you can enjoy:

Christmas Eve:

8pm The Flight Before Christmas
9pm The Story of Santa Claus
11:30 Frasier

Christmas Day:

6am Red Boots for Christmas
6:30 The Stableboy’s Christmas
7am Christmas Memories
7:30 A Fresh Prince Christmas
6:30p According to Jim: Christmas Party
9pm A Very Supernatural Christmas
10pm Friends: Christmas in Tulsa
11pm George Lopez: Christmas Punch
11:30 Frasier: Fight Before Christmas

Get Into The Holidays

Only 17 more shopping days left, and if you’re one of those lucky few who’ve completed the task before the mad rush, WBNX has some relaxing holiday TV rewards for you! More than two dozen Christmas-themed episodes and specials are coming your way between now and December 25, starting with The CW’s “Merry Monday” comedy lineup of Everybody Hates Chris, Aliens in America, Girlfriends and The Game! The boys on Supernatural encounter the anti-Santa, while the Gossip Girl socialites unwrap…well, who knows what? Many of our daily comedies also have some memorable yuletide scripts, including Raymond, Frasier, George Lopez and According to Jim. And, of course, kids love the animated specials about Grandma and her hit-skip reindeer and The Story of Santa Claus. You can find a complete schedule of the holiday fare here on our new Christmas webpage, along with exclusive festive screensavers and other extras featuring your CW faves. Spread the word…and enjoy! P.S. Have you seen our new “Cleveland snowglobe” logo on air? Watch for it!

George Lopez crosses borders with comedy

George Lopez

George Lopez fooled me.  During his sitcom’s six-year network run, I never watched an episode, thinking (for some odd reason) that it wouldn’t be funny.  Boy, was I wrong.  WBNX acquired the show in syndication this fall, so I gave it a try and found the family comedy to be edgy and relevant, not at all what I expected.  George is a very funny guy, and his combative relationship with TV mom “Bennie” is the basis for much of the show’s humor.  Ironically, in real life George was abandoned by both of his parents by age 10, so he’s overcome a lot of personal struggles, including a kidney transplant from his wife two years ago.  This summer, the ALMA Awards (recognizing Hispanic accomplishments in media) presented George with the Television Pioneer Award, an honor well-deserved when you consider that only three other Latinos have ever had lead roles in a TV sitcom: Desi Arnaz (I Love Lucy), Freddie Prinze (Chico & The Man) and Paul Rodriguez (the short-lived A.K.A. Pablo).  His appeal crosses into nearly every medium, as George currently has four films in production, an impressive archive of comedy CDs and DVDs, plus an autobiography, Why You Crying?  Oh, and he still tours regularly with his popular stand-up act!  We’re fortunate to spend a half-hour with the “Latin king of comedy” on a daily basis.
