Special court cases will educate animal owners

Judge David Young has witnessed enough ignorance about animals—and the TV magistrate is doing something about it. Beginning this week, he’ll unleash a “Thank Dog It’s Friday” lineup of pet-related cases as part of each Friday show through Nov. 21. A passionate dog-lover himself (he rescued pooch Maggie 11 years ago), Judge Young says he’s shocked at how many families are completely clueless when it comes to an owner’s rights and responsibilities. The upcoming special programs feature a pit bull’s master getting sued for not fencing the canine; suing a neighbor for letting her pet out without permission—with dreadful results; an argument over the rights to a beloved pet’s remains; and a lawsuit for pain and suffering, after a neighbor’s pet caused the death of her animal. Working closely with the national Humane Society, Judge Young sees this month as an opportunity to raise awareness of proper animal care at a time when many pets are being abandoned. MediaWeek columnist Marc Berman recently viewed an episode of Family Court With Judge Penny, which debuts three weeks from today on WBNX. Here are his thoughts: “Presided over by Judge Penny Brown Reynolds, who began life as an impoverished child raised by a single mother, what immediately set this court show apart was the relationship aspect of the case. Instead of wondering whether or not the 18-year-old son of a troubled mother would win the $1,000 he was suing her for, the relationship between the two took center stage under the guidance of a completely relatable Judge Penny. With so much court (on) the airwaves, you have to bring something unique to the table. And what gives Family Court With Judge Penny an edge is the focus on themes of a more family and relationship oriented nature.” For those who enjoy real-life drama and legal wrangling, WBNX will have a stellar courtroom lineup, weekdays beginning next month:
