Daniel Gillies plays Elijah Mikaelson, the eldest of the Original siblings, on The CW’s new drama The Originals.
Canadian-born and New Zealand-raised Gillies is perhaps best known for his role as Original vampire Elijah on The CW’s The Vampire Diaries. In addition to The Originals, Gillies is working on the highly anticipated second season of CTV’s medical drama Saving Hope, starring opposite Erica Durance.
Gillies’ past television credits include HBO’s True Blood and A&E’s The Glades. He has also made guest appearances on NCIS, Masters of Horror, Jeremiah and Mentors. Gillies also appeared on TNT’s much celebrated miniseries Into the West.
On the big screen, Gillies has starred in films including Bride and Prejudice, Spiderman 2 and Rolan Joffe’s Captivity. Before coming to the United States, Gillies starred in the hit New Zealand television drama Street Legal, for which he was awarded Best Actor in 1999.
A veteran of theater, Gillies has participated in over 20 plays including Julius Caesar, Three Sisters, Long Day’s Journey into Night and The Judas Kiss. In 2006, he played a lead in the International Festival darling The Sensation of Sight, alongside Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn. The following year, Gillies started his own production company, Holy Monster.
Not only does Gillies enjoy being in front of the camera, he also enjoys writing and directing. In 2010, he wrote and directed his first independent film, Broken Kingdom, which won the Best Director Award and the Youth Jury Award for Best Feature Film at the 2011 Rhode Island International Film Festival. Broken Kingdom also took home the Avalon Feature Film Award at this year’s Catalina Film Festival.
Gillies is married to actress Rachael Leigh Cook. They currently live in Los Angeles with a veritable zoo of animals.
